SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 461,417, dated October 20, 1891.
Application filed February 14., 1891- Serial No. 381,488. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT BRANHAM, acitizen of the United States, residing at Belton, in the county of Bell and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Pump, of which the following is a specification;
This invention relates to pumps; and it has for its object to provide a pump which shall be especially adapted for deep wells, and
which shall be simple in construction, durable, and efficient in operation.
With these ends in view the invention consists in the improved construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim. I
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view taken through the working barrel and strainer of my improved pump. Fig. 2 is a perspective detail View, showing the parts constituting the plunger separated or detached from each other. Fig. 3 is a detail View of the strainer and footvalve detached.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures.
1 designates the working barrel, which constitutes, as usual, a portion of the well-casing, but which is preferably made of brass or other metal which is sufficiently durable and capable of receiving a smooth finish.
2 designates the strainer, which is likewise made of brass, perforated, as shown, and sufficiently heavy to support the superimposed parts. The upper end of the straineris screwthreaded interiorly for the reception of a disk or valve-seat 3, having an opening 4, and provided on its upper side with a bail 5.
6 designates an upwardly-opening valve, which is mounted upon the valve-seat'3, and which has a screw-threaded recess 7 for the reception of the stem 8, which extends upwardly through a perforation 9 in the bail 5. The lower end of the working barrel is screw threaded interiorly, as shown at 10, for the reception of the upper half of the valve-disk 3, by means of which the strainer is thus connected with the lower end of the Working barrel.
11 designates the plunger, which is composed of a tubular cylinder 12, screw-threaded exteriorly at its upper end, and having at its lower end an annular flange 13.
14. designates the plunger-head, which has a central perforation 15, and is provided on its under side with a screw-threaded recess 16 to engage the upper screw-threaded end of the cylinder 12. The latter is provided with a series of packing-rings 17, of which in the drawings hereto annexed three have been shown, although it will be understood that a greater or less number may be used. These packing-rings are preferably made of brass, it being the intention in the construction of this pump to avoid as nearly as possible the use of leather or similar perishable material.
18 designates the plunger-rod, which is provided at its lower end with diverging arms 19, terminating in screw-threaded portions or bolts 20, adapted to engage the perforations 21 in the plunger-head 14, to which the said diverging arms may be secured by means of nuts 22 on the under side. The arms 19 constitute a cage, in which is mounted a ballvalve 23, opening upwardly, as will be readily understood.
The operation and advantages of my improved pump will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed. On the upstroke of the plunger the valve 23 drops to its seat and the superimposed water is lifted, while at the same time suction is created in the lower part of the working valve, causing the fluid topass upwardly under the foot-valve. On the downstroke the foot-valve is closed and the valve 23 is raised from its seat, permitting the fluid to pass through the plunger from the lower part of the working valve.
I am aware that pumps embodying the general principles herein shown and having a similar arrangement of valves are old and well known. Such I do not claim. I am not aware, however, that the detailed construction and arrangement of parts herein shown and described have been known or used prior to my invention. v
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- In a pump, the combination of the working barrel screw-threaded interiorly at its lower 10 said disk and having a detachable stein extending through and guided in said perforated bail, substantially as specified.
