Description

N-FETERS. PMOT U-LITHOGRAHLER, WASHINGTON. D-C
WM. D. HOOKER, OF STOCKTON, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PUMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 49,408, dated August 15, 1865.
To all whom et may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM D. HOOKER, of Stockton, in the county of San Joaquin and State otl California, have invented a new and useful Im provemnt in DoubleActin g Suction and Force Pumps for Raising and Forcing Water or other Liquids; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ofthe construction and opera-tion of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of' this speciiication, in Which- Figuie 1 is a longitudinal secion,` showing -the arrangement of the valves, suction and discharge chambers y y. Fig. 2 is also a longitudinal section, m w showing the line ot' section. Fig. 3 is a perspective view ot` valve.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts in the three figures.
The nature of my invention consists inseparating the suction and discharge chambers and suction and discharge valves by a partition, said partition forming a chamber in which the valves operate, and from whichthey can be readily removed, the chamber also acting as a guide to keep the valves in position, as will be `hereinafter more fully shotvn und described.
To enable others skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my machine, I will proceed to describe it.
a represents the pu nip-barrel, constructed of metal and of cylindrical form b b, thepump piston; c, the packing, made ot' metal, india-` rubber, or any material commonly used for such purpose; d, the pump-barrel head; c, the piston-rod; j', the handle; g, the arm on which the handle rotates; It, the vertical and inclided partition separati ng the suction-cham her and suction-valves from the dischargechamber and discharge-valves d a2, the suction-valves; b b2, the discharge-valves, said valves heilig made of metal and fitted to the valve-seats, or covered with leather or india- I'uober or any substanceusually used forsuch purpose, said covering being secured to the valves by means ot' a screw and Washer, as shown; c c2, the suction-valve seats; d cl2, the discharge-valve seats; t', the induction port; j, the eduction-port; la, the air-chant ber; Z, discharge-spout; m m m m, apertures through which bolts or screws are inserted to secu rethe chamber to pum p-cylinder or Where the chamber is east with the cylinder I leave an aperture or opening (indicated by dotted lines it n n a) opposite the valves, through which the valves can bereadilyremoved, said aperture a being covered by a cap or plate and secured to the chamber `in the same manner as A the chamber described is secured to the pumpcylinder; o, the suction-chamber; p, the discharge-chamber; r, the ports in the pumpbarrel. As the pistonbis drawn up thepumpbarrel a the vacuum created thereby causes the suction-valve a' to open, and the water is drawn into the cylinder through the induetion-port i. When the piston b descends the suction-valve a. is closed, discharge-valve b' is opened, and the water is forced `out into the. discharge-chamber p and out of spout Z. At y the same time that the piston is descending the vacuum created above the piston thereb t l causes the suction-valve a2 to open, and Water is drawn up the suetiolrchamber o through or under the suction-valve a2 i the cylinder, to be forced outvthrough di charge-valve b2 into the discharge'chambei and out at the spout L on the return or ne" upward stroke of the piston b, thereby eau ing a continuous stream to flow from the di charge-spout Z.
vThe vertical inclined partition 7L is so ranged as to divide the suction-chambe from the discharge-chamber p, and is c nected or cast to the valve-seats c' c2 d d2 suoli a manner as to form a chamberiuwh the valves lay entirely independentyof `1th chamber, said chamberae'ting "asi al guide the valves in their upward movenm-.nts.y` (Seej Fig. 2.) l
What l claim as my improve to secure by L etters Patent, y p l i 1 The vertical inclined partitioirh.;illrcombizna. tion with the suction-valveseats dotanddischarge-valve seats d dltghed holearranged as described, and forlthefpurposespecitied.
NVILLIA-M `D HOOKER.
