JOHN LA VERGNE, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
PRIMER FOB PUMPS.
Specification of Letters Patent;
Patented Oct. 1.5, 190'?.
Application filed August 1,1906. Serial No. 328,669. p
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN LA VERGNE, a citizen of i the United States, residing at Newark, in the county l of Essex und State of N ew Jersey, have invented cer- Pumps; and 1 do hereby declare the followin`,'fg,P to be a l full, clear, and exact description o the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters oi refer i ence marked thereon, which iorm a part oi this speci- E fication. l This invention relates to a primer for pumps, and pret i erahly centrifugal pumps, and is designed to fill the pump, preliminary to starting it, to insure the suction necessary. i As heretofore made, the primers have been very l large and bulky and have taken up a great deal o room, and they have also had a multiplicity of valves that require considerable attention.
This invention econornizes space, furnishes a more simple d cvice, and is more easily operated. l
1 illustrate, in the accompanying drawing, a centrifi ugal pump 10 huving the inlet portion 11, and the out let l2. Secured to the inlet portion is a cylindrical member l, the iree end 12 of which is attached to a suitable pipe furnishing the supply of water or liquid. (in the end 14, of the cylindrical portion l3, is a check valve 15, and transversely arranged on the cylindrical casing lil, resting.;r on the part 16, is a pump 17 supplied with the pump` rod 18 and thevztlve 19, this pump heing u. lil't pump and adapted to he nranually operated by the handle 20. At the top oi this vertical lift pump g turod, and its simpli is an outlet 21, and this is connected by the pipe 22 with au opening 23 in the side of the .pump near the top. When it is desired to operate the pump and to estabi lish a suction, the pump l() muet be filled with water,
5 tain new and useful Improvements in Primers for l and to accomplish this the liftpump is operated which draws water through the opening 24, through the lift pump 17 and the pipe 22 into the pump 1() until it is 40 ,y filled, the water being held in the pump by the cheek valve 15. When the pump l0 is operated the valve l opens, and the pressure oi vWater in tlie pumpl insureq the closing of the valve 19. This prinfer is small and takes up but little ropm, is economically meunier y makes its operation in Having thus described my invention, what 1. ln a device of the kind described, the combinati a pump having an,lnlet pipe leading' thereto, and having :r chock vn ve therein, with a lift pump urranged vorsoly on the inlet pipe beyond the check valve, meeuw manually operating the lift pump, and un outlet pipe l ingr from the lift pump to the upper part of the pump For charging the same whereby the priming,` .is done hv n pipe other than the inlet pipe.
2, A primer for pumpe; comprising n pump having,Y un inlet pipe und :in ourlet `pipe, a check vulve iu the inlet pipe. n lift pump having its inlet-on the inlet pipe of :he main pump beyond the check valve, menne for manually operating thev lift pump. und :L `eet-ond pipe connecting the litt pump with the iii-sl pump near the top thor-iso!" to prime thi` first pump. wllcrchy the cheek vulve is kept closed until the nmiu pump is opcrulrd.
ln testimony, that l claim the foregoing, I have hereunto svt, my hund this'. :Hlth doy o1" July 1006.
' .lOl-IN LA VERGNE.
