IMPROVEMENT IN PUMPS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To whom it may concern.-
Beit known'that I, ANTHONY SLU'rHoUn, of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Double-Acting Pump; and I do declare that the following is a true and accurte description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference` marked thereon, and being a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved Pump,
Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal section, and
Figure 3 is a cross-section of the same.
Figure 4 is a detail ofthe glands and packing.
Like letters refer t0 like parts in each figure.
The nature of this invention relates to an improved construction of double-actin g lift and force pumps; and consists inthe arrangement of a valve-piston and loose follower at each end of a piston-rod, reciprocating in a cylinder at each end of a horizontal chamber, operated by a vibating lever; in a peculiar stuffing-box, for packing the vibrating lever; and in the general arrangement of its parts, as hereinafter more fully shown and set forth.
In the drawings- A represents an elliptical shell, supported by proper standards, a, and closed by heads B, secured in place by screw-bolts and nuts b, passing through lugs b', in the heads. f
Within the shell, and forming part thereof, is a cylinder, C, from the centre of which rises the air-chamber D.
E are ordinary valves, one of which is hung in the opening at each end of the cylinder.
The crescent-shaped passage between the cylinder and the shell forms the water-way F, supplied through au inlet or suction-pipe G.
H is a piston-rod, upon each end of which is secured a piston, I, perforated with several large openings, J, alternately covered and uncovered by a follower', K, sliding loosely on the rod, between the piston and the shoulder 7a., as shown in fig. 2.
The piston-rod is of such length that when one of its pistons is at one end of the cylinder, the other piston is near the entrance to the air-chamber, which, in fact, divides the cylinder into two pump-barrels.
The piston-rod is reciprocated by a vibrating-lever, L, pivoted at c, in the upper part of the stuiing-box M, which surmouuts the air-chamber.
The lower end of the, lever L is circular in form, and inserted in a slot in the centre of the piston-rod, to give it motion.
The lever lis enlarged, toform a disk-like hub, N, fig. 2, in the stuffing-box, which has a slot on each side, in which is placed rubber or other packing, n, against and around the hub of the lever, and compressed by a gland, O, entering each slot, the glands being drawn toward each other by proper screw-bolts, as shown. By packingthe lever where it has the least motion, a tight joint is made, with the minimum of friction.
l is a diaphragm or well in the air-chamber, attached to its upperpart, and enclosing the lever L.
As the air in the air-chamber is compressed by the rising of the water therein, it might escape through the stutting-box; but when the water rises to the bot- `tom of the diaphragm, it cuts off communication of the air to the stuffing-box, and thus an air-pressure isl constantly maintained.
The operation of the pistons and followers will be readily understood by reference to the drawings.
As the piston is drawn away from the end of the cylinder, the suction causes the follower to slide on the rod until it strikes the piston and covers its openings, when the valve E will open, and admit water to the cylinder; reversing the motion of the piston, the valve closes, and the follower moves back from the pistou, the water flowing through its openings J into the air-chamber, whence it is discharged through the outlet Q. y
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
.-1. The lever L, provided with the hub N, the slotted stuffing-box M, glands O, and any suitable packing, in connection with the air-chamber of a double-cylinder pump, substantially as and for the purposesl set orth.
2. The combination and arrangement of the shell A, covers B, 'lugs bf, rods b, cylinder O, air-chamber D, valves E, suction G, piston-rod H, perforated'pistous I, followers K, lever L, stufing-box M, glands 0,diaphragm P, and discharge Q, when constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as and for the' purposes herein shown and set forth.
