FORCE-PUMP.
T0 all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that l, AARON J. TYLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Force- Pumps, of which the following is a specifi cat-ion.
This invention relates to pumps and more particularly to that general class known as force pumps.
The object of the invention is to provide a force pump of simple and durable construction, capable of being used for pumping either water or air without the necessity of disturbing the 'valvular arrangement of the pump or in any manner altering or changing the construction thereof.
A further object of the invent-ion is to provide a pump, the valve and piston of which are so constructed as to occupy the least possible amount of space within the pump cylinder and to give thoroughly reliable service under all conditions.V
A further object is to provide means whereby the lower valve and seat, as well as the piston, may be quickly reversed so as to reverse the action of the pump, when desired.
A further object is to provide novel means for clamping the cup-shaped leather washer or piston :in engagement with the piston head, and means for forcing the washer or piston in contact with the interior wall of the cylinder so as to prevent leakage between the parts and at the same time insure uniform wear on said piston.
A still further object of the invention is generally to improve this class of devices so as to increase their utility, durability and efliciency.
Further objects and advantages will appear in the following description, it being understood that various changes in form, proportions and minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a force pump constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevation; Fig. 3 shows a bottom plan view, transverse Specification of Letters Patent.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The improved force pump forming the subject matter of the present invention comprises a cylinderl 5 having sleeves G rigidly secured to the opposite ends thereof and provided with exteriorl threads 7 for engagement with the adjacent cylinder heads, indicated at 8 and 9. The interior walls of the sleeves (i are preferably provided with circiunferential shoulders 10 for contact with the adjacent endsof the cylinder 5 so as not to offer any surface obstruction within the cylinder which would tend to impede the flow of liquid when the pump is in operation.
The cylinder heads 8 and 9 are provided with laterally extending nipples 1.1 and 12 having exterior threads 13 for engagement with correspondingly threaded pipe sections, the nipple 11 constituting an inlet port and the nipple 1Q an outlet port. The cylinder head 8 is provided with a gland 14 and an inwardly extending flange 15, there being agasket 16 interposed between the flange 15 and the end of the adjacent sleeve 6 in order to prevent leakage between the parts.
Slidably mounted in the cylinder 5, is a piston rod 17, one end of which projects through the gland 14, while the other end thereof is provided with a circumferential stop shoulder 18 defining a reduced cylindrical extension 19, the free end of which is exteriorly threaded, as indicated Y at 20. Mounted on the inner end of the rod 17, is a piston head, preferably formed of co-acting disks 21 and 22, each disk in turn being formed of inner and outer concentric rings connected by radiating ribs 23 defining intermediate ports 24 to permit the passage of air or liquid through the valve, as the case may be. One side of the disk 21 is provided with a curved wall 25 which forms a seat for a cup-shaped leather washer or packing 26, said disk being also provided with an annular shoulder 27 arranged at an angle to the radius of the disk and at a right angle to the curved wall 25 of the disk and forming an abutment for the adjacent end or edge of the cup-shaped washer or packing 26, the latter being preferably placed on the disk with the hair side of the leather next to the interior wall of the cylinder. The edge of the inner disk 22 is curved at 28 to conform to the curvature of the wall 25 and is adapted to bear against the inner face of the cup-shaped leather Washer or packing adjacent the shoulder 27 of the disk 21 for the purpose of clampingvthe same on the piston head. It will be observed that the inner ring and the radial arms of each disk occupy substantially the same diametrical plane so that the two disks may fit close together thereby reducing the space taken up in the cylinder by them and effectually securing the packing. The wall of the opening in the inner ring of the disk 21 is smooth and unobstructed and flts over the cylindrical extension 19 of the piston rod for contact with the shoulder ,18 thereof, while the wall of the opening in the inner ring of the disk 22 is threaded for engagement with the threads 20 on said piston rod so that by rotating the disk 22 on the threaded end of the rod, not only will the leather washer or piston 26 be firmly clamped in engagement with the disk 21, but both disks will be securely held against accidental displacement on the rod 17.
One side of the disk 22 is concaved at 29 to form a seat for a valve 30, the latter being preferably made of fabric packing, such as cloth or wire, and adapted to normally close the ports 24 in the co-acting disks constituting the piston head. The valve 30 is normally fiat, and is retained in position on its concaved seat 29 by means of a nut 31 engaging the threaded end of the rod 17 and bearing against a metallic or other washer 32. It will here be noted that as the valve 30 is normally fiat, when the nut 31 Vis adjusted on the threaded. end of the rod,
the central portion of the valve will be forced inwardly in contact with the concaved sea-t 29 so as to frictionally hold the outer edge of the valve in contact with the outer ring of the disk It will also be noted that the nut 31, in addition to retaining the valve 30 in position on the disk 22, also assists in preventing accidental displacement of thepiston head.
One side of the disk 22, at the curved portion 28 thereof, is preferably cut-away to form an annular' groove 33, so as to permit a portion of the air or water passing through the ports 24 o-f the piston head to come in contact with the inner face of t-he leather washer 26 and force the hair side of the leather in contact with the interior wall of the cylinder 5, thus not only to ,prevent leakage between the parts, but also to insure a uniform wear on the washer. That portion of the disk 21, opposite the curved wall 25 thereof, is preferably dished, as indicated at 34, while that portion of the mating disk 22, opposite the concaved face 29, is also preferably dished, as indicated at 35.
Disposed at the lower end of the cylinder 5 and preferably arranged at substantially right angles to the outlet port 12, is an auxiliary disk 36 having a laterally extending anchoring flange 37 which is supported on a flange 38 extending inwardly from the lower head 9 of the cylinder and similar inconstruction to the iange 15. A gasket 39 is preferably interposed between the flanges 37 and 38 and a similar gasket 40 between the flange 37 and end of the adjacent sleeve 6 in order to prevent leakage of air or water when the pump is in operation. One side of the disk 36 is provided with a concaved face 41 constituting a seat for a valve 42, the latter being similar in construction to the valve 30 and retained in position on its seat by a screw 43, the threaded shank of which engages a correspondingly threaded opening 44 formed in said auxiliary disk. The inner and outer rings comprising the auxiliary disk 36 are connected by radiating ribs 45 to form intermediate ports 46, through which the air or water is discharged on the downward stroke of the piston, the outer' ring of the auxiliary disk, at the concaved face thereof, being preferably formed with a relatively short inwardly extending flange 47 against which the outer edge of the valve 42 rests when the latter is in closed position.
When the device is used for pumping water, the operation thereof is as follows: 0n the upward stroke of the piston, the valve 42 will be moved to closed position and a partial vacuum formed between said `valve and the piston, with the result vthat as the piston continues to travel in an upward direction, the water above said piston will open the valve 30 and pass to the front thereof. 0n the downward stroke of the piston, the valve 42 will be moved to open pump will operate in exactly the same manner when pumping air. l
Attention is here called to the fact that the parts comprising the piston head, as well as the parts comprising the lower valve, may be reversed so as to reverse the action of thepump when desired, in which event, the member 9 will constitute the suction head and the member S the force head of the pump, as will be readily understood. It will also be noted that the leather washer 26 is normally flat and will be forced into substantially cupshape by engagement with the co-acting disks comprising the piston head without the formation of any wrinkles or creases whatever, thus permitt-ing a nice fit between the leather washer and cylinder and insuring the proper operation of the pump at all times.
It will of course be understood that the disks may be formed with any desired number of radiating ribs and ports, and that the piston rod may be provided with any suitable operating handle or said pump operated from some extraneous source of power without departing from the spirit of the invention. l
