Abstract

Portable hand-pumps.-A double-acting compressed-air pump or inflator having concentricallyarranged tubes is constructed so as to compress separate charges drawn into the opposite ends of the low-pressure cylinder. The Figures show the preferred form, in which a tube B secured to the handle and provided with a piston K reciprocates between an inner tube C and an outer tube A secured to a base D provided with the usual folding foot-rests. The piston is provided with yielding cup-leathers L, M arranged edge to edge. During a down-stroke, air previously drawn in through a ball valve F is forced past the cup-leather M and a passage in the piston into the chamber formed between the tubes B, C, passing thence to the tyre by way of a non-return valve Q. During an upstroke, air previously drawn in through a cupleather valve G held in place by a resilient ring H is similarly forced past the cup-leather L. The cup-leathers L, M may be arranged back to back by modifying the air-passages in the piston and providing them with non-return valves. The handle may ba attached to the tube A, and the tube C dispensed with.
