Abstract

Valves, arrangement of; regulating compression.-Air enters at each end of the pump cylinder through ports, during substantially the whole of the corresponding stroke, and is delivered at one end only; a transfer passage connects the ends. A second stage single acting piston may be directly connected to the double-acting piston, their delivery strokes occurring in opposite direction. The Figures show a two-stage compressor having a first stage piston 1 and a second stage piston 2 of either of the forms shown in Figs. 1, 3. Air enters a chamber 8 and is delivered on the up stroke to the space 4 below the piston 1 through lateral valves; at the same time, air enters the chamber 8 from the space 23 above the piston 1 through the passage 24, while in the second stage air is compressed above the piston 2 and delivered through the passage 21. On the down stroke, air enters above the piston 1 through the passage 24, and the air below the piston 1 is delivered through outlet valves to a passage 15 leading to an intercooler and to the second stage compression space above the piston 2. An automatic bye-pass valve is arranged between the inlet chamber 8 and delivery chamber 14, and a manual by-pass valve 27 between the second stage delivery passage 21 and the inlet chamber 8.
