Abstract
432,586. Free-piston air-compressors. JUNKERS, H., 21, Hauptmann Loeper Platz, Dessau, Anhalt, Germany. Feb. 8, 1934, No. 4210. Convention date, Feb. 16, 1933. [Class 8 (i)] A free-piston engine compressor is arranged so that the exhaust ports of the engine unit are opened before the delivery valves of the compressor. Within the cylinder 1 are mounted opposed pistons 2 controlling an inlet port 3 and exhaust port 4, the pistons carrying at their outer ends compressor pistons 10 which are coupled by rack mechanism 21, 22 with a common pinion 23. The compressor is provided with inlet valves 7 and outlet valves 8, and the compressor dimensions and compression rates are such that the valves 8 do not open on the delivery stroke until the port 4 is appreciably uncovered by the piston 2. Where the compression ratio of the compressor is low it may be necessary to keep the inlet valves 7 open during the first portion of the compression stroke. In this construction the piston travel is appreciably greater than that necessary for the cycle of operations on the power side.
