Abstract

Stroke, varying; regulating delivery by opening suction and delivery valves.-In hydraulic pumps and like apparatus, in which the capacity is varied either by varying the stroke of the piston or by altering the position of the valve &c. in relation to the crank &c. used for reciprocating the piston, the capacity-varying means is actuated by an apparatus comprising both hydraulic and mechanical actuating-means. In one form, the apparatus comprises a cylinder 1 containing a piston 2 provided with a tubular rod 3, which is connected by a link 5 to a lever 6 connected to the capacityvarying means. The rod 3 has two sets of ports 13, 24 and two shoulders 10, 11, and encloses a valve 15 provided with ports 25 and flanges 22, 23. The valve is operated by a hand-lever 17, 18, and when moved down by the lever, it opens the ports 13 and connects the space 35 below the piston 2 to exhaust through the ports 25, 13, 26, and enables pressure-liquid from the pump &c. entering at the port 28 to move the piston 2 downwards and operate the lever 6. This movement of the piston restores the piston and valve to their original relative positions. If the pressure in the apparatus is insufficient, the piston 2 may be moved by operating the lever 17, 18 so as to push the valve 15 down on the shoulder 11.
