Abstract

Revolving-cylinder pumps ; oscillating-cylinder pumps ; cam-actuated pumps ; stroke, varying; valves, arrangement of; valve gear.-An hydraulic variable-speed gear comprises two sets of cylinders and pistons, both sets of cylinders being connected to the driving shaft, while one set of pistons is connected to a swash-plate or eccentric on the driven shaft, and the other set to an adjustable non-rotating swash-plate or eccentric, the distributing valves appertaining to the latter set being operated by a fixed cam or eccentric. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the cylinder block 2 on the driving shaft 1 is provided with chambers 23, 24, and the cylinders are connected to the chambers through ducts 25 and distributing valves 22 operated by a fixed cam-track 26 and a cam-track 27 rotating with a swash-plate 6 on the driven shaft. A valve 30 is operable by members 31, 32 to open communication between the chambers. The adjustable swash-plate 8 is connected by links 12 to a crosshead 11 carried by pistons 13, 14 having spring-pressed valves 18, 19. When either of these valves is opened by a tappet 34 on a rod 32, liquid may escape through the valve from the corresponding cylinder 15 or 16 and the forces acting on the swashplate swing it so that the crosshead moves towards that cylinder, until the pistons overtake the tappet, when the valve is again closed by its spring and the swash-plate is locked in its new position. In the radial-cylinder form shown in Fig. 2, telescopic tubes l, m forming cylinder and piston pairs oscillate on curved members J, and those co-operating with the eccentric E' on the driven shaft have valves n operated by tappets o, the valves of the other set being operated by cams carried by spindles having rollers engaging an eccentric track formed in the casing of the gear. The adjustable eccentric is carried by a slide f, Fig. 4, having pistons i received in cylinders h. When a control rod u is moved, a floating lever v is rocked and opens one of two valves t, so that the eccentric is moved in the direction of the opened valve until the latter is again closed by overtaking mechanism.
