Abstract

Actuating and regulating compression by fluid-pressure motors.-The plunger 8 of an air compressor is operated by a piston 7 acted on by column of liquid 10 oscillated by a driving piston 5 the stroke of the piston 7 being compensated for leakage of liquid by adding liquid to or withdrawing it from the column by a valve 16. The valve 16 is closed by a spring and is opened by a cam and lever 28 operated by a projection 24 on a rod 21 attached to the plunger 8, and can be set to release liquid at any desired point by the turnbuckle 25. During the air-suction stroke the piston 5 in moving to the left forces liquid round pipe 13 to the back of the piston 7 moving it to the left and allowing valve 29 to close by spring at a definite point so that feeding liquid which is being continually supplied through pipes 14 and 15 by a pump at least replaces the liquid lost at the previous stroke.
