544,093. Starting; stopping. PASCARA, R. P. Nov. 11, 1939, No. 170/42. Convention date, Nov. 12, 1938. Divided out of 540,855. [Class 7 (v)] Relates to the starting and stopping of freepiston compressors or gas generators actuated by internal-combustion and having a hollow engine piston 18 integral with a compressor piston 22 sliding upon a fixed tubular member 25, within which is a control piston 28 connected to a valve 26 normally cutting off communication between the interior of the member 25 and the space 24 within the piston 18. The compressor shown bas opposed engine pistons 18 integral respectively with low-pressure and high-pressure compressor pistons 22, 23. Starting and stopping are controlled by a cam 49 on the rod 48 of a piston 46 in a cylinder 45, to which compressed air is admitted on opening a valve 41 by means of a hand lever 15. The cam 49 opens a valve 54 admitting compressed air from a pipe c through a pipe 55 to the space above the piston 28. A valve 30 admits the air to the interior of the member 25 and thence to a cylinder 56, causing the piston 57 to move an abutment 58 out of the path of the rod 48. This rises further, opening a valve 66 to atmosphere and so releasing pressure behind the piston 28, which rises and opens the valve 26 to admit compressed air to the space 24, causing the synchronized engine pistons 18 and compressor pistons 22, 23 to move together, so that starting takes place on the injection of fuel. For stopping, the hand lever 15 is turned to close the valve 41, the stem of which has a bleed slot 52 releasing the pressure from the cylinder 45, so that the piston 46 descends and the cam 49 opens a valve 59 admitting pressure through a pipe 60 beneath a piston 35 on the push-rod 34 of the fuel pump 9, thus stopping the pump. Pressure air from the cylinder 36 flows through a pipe 61 and raises a piston 40 and rod 37, moving the piston 22, 18 into starting position ; the piston 40 uncovers a port admitting air through a pipe 62 to actuate a piston 64 to displace an abutment 65, allowing the rod 48 to complete its stroke, opening a valve 68 and releasing pressure from the cylinder 36.
