[Class 8 (i)] [Also in Groups XXVI, XXVII. and XXIX] The clearance in the compressor cylinder or an associated buffer cylinder of an internal - combustion free piston compressor or gas generator (wherein a turbine h utilizes the exhaust &c. of the motor cylinder to which the compressor cylinder supplies air) is maintained constant by moving an end wall of the clearance space ; the fuel supply to the motor may also be controlled. The movable wall shown in Fig. 1 is formed by the head of a blocking piston 3, the position of which piston is controlled by a piston 19. Air enters through valves 12 from an inlet duct 14 and after compression passes through valves 13 to an outer duct 15 and through ports la to the combustion space ; the exhaust from this space passes off through a duct 16. The buffer cylinder is constituted by an extension of the piston 3 in which an extension 6 of the compressor piston works. Fuel is supplied by a pump 10. Fig. 3 shows the pistons 19 operated through servo-valves 34 actuated from the speed governor 24 of a turbine supplied through the outlet 16; the actuating linkage is also adjusted by a piston 38 subject to the pressure of the compressor discharge, and the governor controls the fuel pump 10. In another form, the governor actuates only the pistons 19, while the fuel pump is controlled by the pressure in the buffer space conveyed to a piston to actuate the valve of a servo-piston actuating the fuel rack.
