Abstract
181,380. Junod, P. June 10, 1921, [Convention date]. Engines working on special cycles. - In uniflow and other engines, the formation of a loop in the indicator diagram by the overcompression of residue steam on the return stroke of the piston is prevented by varying the timing of the inlet valve, and in some cases also of the exhaust valve, according to the pressure of the exhaust steam. The inlet valve is opened when the pressure of the residual steam is equal to that of the steam supply, and may be arranged to open either at the end of the return stroke or at the beginning of the working stroke, the residual steam in the latter case having expanded again to the pressure of the steam supply. The engine may be provided with independent gear for varying the cut-off. The valve gear h of the inlet valve is controlled through a link g and lever e by a piston b, which is acted on either directly or indirectly, by the pressure of the exhaust steam, against the action of a spring d. The valve gear i of the exhaust valve may also be controlled from the lever e. In the latter case, with low exhaust pressures the apparatus is so arranged that the control is effected primarily by varying the timing of the exhaust valve, while with high exhaust presssures the timing of the inlet valve is principally affected. For this purpose the inlet valve-gear may be adjustable, e.g. by means of a piston k, after the piston b has been adjusted to its full extent.
