Valves; valve gear.- A single valve 47 controlling the cylinder port 46 works in conjunction with coaxial inlet and exhaust valves 40, 33, the latter comprising a curved flange seating at 35, and the inlet valve 40 seating on the exhaust valve and having its upper face curved in continuation of the exhaust valve . The valves are shown closed, in which position they are all held by a spring 52. At the commencement of exhaust, the valve 47 is lifted by a cam 55, thereby allowing the cylinder pressure to act on the curved faces of the inlet and exhaust valves so as to move them both downwards against the action of the spring 52, thus opening the exhaust passage 15. Towards the end of the exhaust period, as the cylinder pressure becomes lessened, a bulge 57 on the cam brings a boss 49 against the bottom of the exhaust valve stem 28, thereby commencing the return of the inlet and exhaust valves, which then continues under the action of the spring until the exhaust valve becomes seated at 35. The inlet valve 40 then continues to move upwards by its own inertia, thereby opening the cylinder to the inlet passage 14 through ports 23, 27 in the body of the exhaust valve and its guide. Pistons 26, 37 act as dashpots to the exhaust valve. In a modification, the inlet valve 40 and valve 47 are flat, the former being flexible.
