Abstract

129,729. Ricardo, H. R. Dec. 11, 1917. Valve-gear.-In a combined cam and fluid actuated gear, a beat or lift valve is opened by a cam. and closed, normally by fluid pressure, and at starting or during slow running, wholly or in part by a spring. In the construction shown, the valve spindle carries a piston D, the underside of which is acted upon by compressed air delivered from a reservoir L supplied by an engine-driven pump N. The closing pressure on the valve thus varies with the speed of the engine, the reservoir pressure being determined by a controlled escapeorifice L<1>. Mounted on the stem of the valve is a loose spring-actuated piston.H open to the atmosphere on its underside through a passage G<1>. At starting, the spring holds the piston H in its uppermost position in contact with the underside of the piston D. As the pressure in the reservoir increases, the piston H is gradually returned to the position shown, the seating of the valve then being effected entirely by the pressure of the air in the chamber E. Air trapped in a chamber D<1> acts as a buffer and prevents the valve from closing violently upon its seat Specification 125,659 is referred to.
