Lever - actuated pumps; tappet - actuated pumps; stroke, varying; regulating delivery by by-passes; regulating delivery by opening suction valves.-In a fuel pump for internal-combustion engines, the delivery is regulated according to the speed of the engine by opening, during the delivery stroke of the plunger 2, a small valve 28 in the suction valve 29, and, in certain cases, by opening the suction valve also. The opening of the valves is effected by the engine governor through the links 26, 34, 32, 30<a>. The plunger 2 is actuated by a cam 14, lever 12, and tappet 16 acting on a member 21 resting on the plunger head. The tappet 16 is carried in the head of a screwed rod 17 mounted in a screwed bush 36, which can be turned by means of a nut 18 to move the rod 17 and tappet 16 up or down and so vary the stroke of the plunger. The nut 18 is held in position by a bolt 39 engaging a notch in the nut. Specifications 18.066/14, [Class 7 (iii), Internal-combustion engines, Igniting &c.], and 18,067/14 are referred to.
