Abstract

121,470. Price, W. T. Dec. 10, 1917, [Convention date]. Regulating. - In an engine in which the main portion of each charge of liquid fuel is introduced into air in the cylinder during the compression stroke and ignition is effected by the compression of combustible mixture thus formed, fuel injection nozzles 27, which impart a whirling motion to the fuel, are disposed on opposite sides of a waterjacketed combustion chamber so that their streams converge and meet along the axis of the cylinder. The combustion space may be formed in a head x which is separate from a cover y in which are housed an air-inlet valve 1, an exhaust valve 2, and a sparking-plug 21, the air-inlet passage being controlled by a hand-actuated throttle valve 35. The combustion chamber has conical portions 23 which open into a central part of circular crosssection, the parts 23 being cut away at 24 to facilitate the opening of the air and exhaust valves. Fuel is supplied by a pump, Fig. 8, actuated by an adjustable carn 8, the return or suction stroke being effected by a spring and limited by an adjustable stop 34. A member 5<a> cnables the pump to be actuated by hand. Excess fuel delivered by the pump is returned through a by-pass pipe 10 in which is located a mechanicallyactuated valve 11 controlled by a governor. The valve is opened during the delivery strokes of the pump by a cam-actuated lever 13 pivoted to a lever 14 which rests at its free end upon a governor lever 15. The lever 13 first opens a valve 11<a> in the by-pass and then the main valve 11. At starting, the ignition plug may spark continuously to warm up the combustion space.
