- Control Of The Air-Fuel Ratio Of Carburetors (AREA)
Abstract
24,445. Morris, C. C. B. Oct. 25. Spray carburettors.-The fuel, the secondary air, and the mixture are controlled simultaneously and the fuel valve may be separately adjusted for various fuels. A cam-surface 12 attached to a slide coacts with an adjustable pin 15, Fig. 1, in the spring plunger 4 carrying the fuel regulating-needle 3. The slide is connected to the throttle at 14, a suitable throttle consisting of a cylinder 17, Fig. 3, in a casing 16, the cylinder having a solid end 22 adapted to control the passage of mixture from the pipe 11, Fig. 1, through the heater (when used) into the induction pipe 21, an abutment screw 24 limiting the closing of the mixture passage. The other end of the throttle is open to the atmosphere and it has air ports 30, 31 adapted to allow passage of secondary air into passage 32 connected to the engine. When the screw 24 is out so as to allow the throttle to completely cut off the mixture, a port 25 in the throttle coacts with a port 26 leading from a separate petrol carburettor and a port 27 connected to the engine. The cam surface from I to II allows less fuel with greater suction before secondary air is admitted, and from III to IV more fuel as secondary air is admitted, the primary suction thus falling and more fuel again from V to VI, as supply of secondary air becomes very great. Instead of the pin 15 being adjustable, the cam 12 may bear upon a second cam which controls the height of the cam 12, and according to the Provisional Specification this cam may also control the mixture supply to the engine.
