Abstract

173,623. Erade, C. J. Oct. 9, 1920. Spray carburettors.-Liquid fuel, supplied' from a constant-level chamber 1 to a fuel pipe 2,. is drawn from the pipe and supplied in an atomized condition to the induction pipe 5 by a jet of compressed air supplied by a compressor 8 through a nozzle 7, the mixture throttle valve 11 being coupled to means for regulating the volume of compressed air delivered at the nozzle 7. As shown, the throttle valve 11 is connected by a rod 13 with a valve 12 controlling the air inlet to the compressor. Non-return valves 14, 15 are provided in the air pipe 6. The crank 18 of the compressor is so coupled to the engine that the delivery period of the compressor synchronizes with the whole or part of the suction stroke of the engine. A cut-off valve 19, which may be coupled with either of the valves 11, 12, and a non-returnvalve 20 are provided in the fuel pipe 2. To facilitate starting, an opening 21 for the introduction of light fuel and a draining-cock 24 may be provided on the fuel pipe 2. In a modification, the air pipe 6 is arranged at the side of the fuel pipe 2 and is connected thereto by a lateral passage. In modifications, the volume of air delivered at the nozzle 7 is varied either by altering the strength of the spring 16 controlling the valve 14 by means of a screw plug, or by providing a valve in the air supply pipe, in either case a relief valve being provided in the compressor or in the delivery pipe between the valve and the compressor. In both' cases the valve is connected to the throttle valve 11. In a further modification, the cylinder of the air compressor or the air delivery pipe is provided with a spring-loaded valve the pressure on which can be varied by an adjustable plug connected with the throttle valve. According to the Provisional Specification, a plurality of pipes may be provided for supplying different fuels or fuel and water.
