Abstract
479,851. Starting. HEYWOOD, C. F. Aug. 11, 1936, No. 22097. [Class 7 (v)] A multi-cylinder engine is started by injecting into each cylinder a mixture of fuel and compressed air or a non-inflammable gas, during the compression stroke, in addition to an injection of the air or gas alone, or of the fuel mixture, during the expansion stroke. The compressed air or gas is supplied from a reservoir 15, past a manually-operated valve 16, to an annular chamber 13 behind a rotary distributing valve 18 which is driven by gearing 21, 22 from the cam-shaft, and has ports 19, 19a registering in turn with pipes 7 ... 10 leading to non-return valves 6 in the cylinder heads. The ports 19a are supplied by a passage 19b with the fuel mixture formed by the ejector action of the compressed air or gas flowing past an adjustable nozzle 27 connected to a fuel tank by a pipe 25. The ports 19 extend. through the valve 18 and are fed directly by the compressed air or gas. As soon as the engine fires the valve 16 is closed and the engine will continue to operate on combustible mixture drawn from the normal carburetter 3. In a modification, the annular chamber 13 is supplied with a compressed mixture of fuel and air or gas, the fuel supply and the nozzle 27 are omitted, and the port 19 is elongated to include the port 19a. The fuel mixture will thus be continuously injected during the latter part of the compression stroke and the whole of the expansion stroke. Specification 417,180 is referred to.
