Abstract

18,095. Vickers, Ltd., and McKechnie, J. Dec. 28. Regulating delivery by opening suction valves.-The fuel inject'iou valve lever E of an internal-combustion engine is mounted upon an eccentric or crank H adjustable about the centre f and of such dimensions that the cam bowl is moved thereby in both a radial and tangential direction with respect to the cam C. When the tangential movement is opposite to the motion of the cam C, the valve is always opened approximately at the same period of the cycle, but when moved in the same direction as the cam, the period of opening of the valve is gradually retarded and the mechanism is suitable for variable-speed engines. The duration of opening of the valve is determined by the shape of the rear face of the cam C. The effective part of the delivery stroke of the fuel pump P is timed to occur with the opening of the valve by adjusting the eccentric H simultaneously with the eccentric N upon which the lever for holding open the suction valve V is mounted. The cam C<2> and eccentric M are so designed that the valve is always opened at the beginning of the suction stroke.
