Abstract

1770. Aston, G. F. Jan. 22. Cam-actuated pumps; regulating delivery by bypasses.-Fig. 2 shows a liquid-fuel pump for supplying an internal-combustion engine through a passage C' and an injection valve B. The pump delivers excess fuel which escapes through a bypass containing a sight-glass F. The suction valve G is held open while the roller a<4> traverses the concentric portion a<3> of the cam A the fuel being injected into the cylinder during the middle portion of the pump stroke when the roller a<4> enters the depressions a, a<1> of the cam. The two injections produced by the depressions a, a<1> are not essential; one injection only may be used. A pump of similar construction may also be used solely to open the fuel injection valve B the liquid pumped acting upon the underside of a piston b<1> on the injection valve. The cams for actuating the suction valves may be adjusted axially to vary the opening of the valves.
