Abstract

Securing rapid ejection of liquid; valve-gear.- The fuel is injected into the cylinders of an internal-combustion engine by the direct action of a pump B, which pumps a large excess of fuel, the high injection pressure being attained gradually by mechanically operating the suction valve C or otherwise to exercise a choking effect. The relief valve E is set to open at a predetermined pressure, and the delivery valve F, which also acts as the injection valve, regulates the amount of fuel delivered. In the form shown in Fig. 1, which relates to single-cylinder engines, the injection valve is contained in the same casing as the pump &c. but in other forms it is detached. The timing- apparatus for the injection valve, of which several forms are described, is shown in Fig. 1 as a sliding cam f, but it may comprise a lever mechanism operated by a fixed cam, the lever having a movable fulcrum. The valve F may have an extension passing through a gland to the atmosphere so that it does not open against the pressure.
