Abstract

390,596. Oil engines. ELSMERE, E. C. H., Burton-by-Lincoln, Lincoln. Jan. 27, 1932, No. 2484. [Class 7 (iii).] In an internal-combustion engine, an injector G delivers fuel into an open cavity in a piston D and the fuel and air are driven through a duct F leading from the cavity to a restricted orifice in a projection E on the piston, the projection, towards the end of the compression stroke, entering and closing a port B connecting the cylinder with a combustion chamber A. The injector G may deliver the fuel into a recess H in the cylinder casing or directly into the cavity in the piston. When several injectors are used, several ducts are provided which may have separate outlets or one common outlet. With low compression engines, a more volatile fuel may be injected at the commencement of the suction stroke to lie in the cavity until the air blast towards the end of the compression stroke vaporizes it.
