Abstract

144,169. Erickson, A. Jan. 29, 1919. Valve-gear; regulating.-Air and fuel valves are actuated by a single camactuated member, and a variable clearance is provided between an auxiliary fuel-supply valve and its actuating- mechanism for varying the amount of liquid fuel delivered to the fuel-admission valve proper. The invention is shown in connexion with an engine of the Diesel or semi-Diesel type described in Specification 142,188, in which the liquid fuel is supplied to the hollow stem 17 of a fuel valve 20 seated within the air valve 10, and the fuel is vaporized and ignited in a cavity 12 in the head of this valve. The valves are actuated from a cam 28 through a lever 30 which reduces the stroke and brings the gear nearer to the cylinder, thus enabling a long bearing 3 to be used for the crank-shaft. The valve lever 34 is actuated from the lever 30 by a rod of adjustable length, and the gear is held against the cam by a spring 37 shown in the enlarged view in Fig. 2. The inner end of the lever 34 moves upwards to open the auxiliary fuel valve 26, and downwards to open the fueladmission valve 20 and the air valve 10. A wedge 39 is moved by hand or by a governor to vary the lift and the duration of opening of the valve 26. The valves 20 and 10 are opened in succession by the engagement of the lever 34 with the cap 18 on the stem of the valve 20 and the subsequent engagement of the cap with the collar 15 on valve 10. Adjustment of the length of the valve-rod 32 alters the normal position of the lever arm 34 between the parts 39. 18 and so varies the relative proportions of air and fuel.
