Abstract

Valves.-Inlet and exhaust passages 2, 3 controlled by a single valve 1 terminate in seatings inclined at an acute angle and co-operating with a flap valve 4 one side of which rocks between surfaces 7, 8. In a modification, t h e spherical end of a spring-controlled stem bears in a spherical cup in the upper surface of the flap valve. This upper surface may further be provided with cooling-ribs. The seatings for the flap valve may be coned or bevelled off. Valve-gear.-The flap valve is dished to form a spherical bearing for a block 13 and a cap 14 secured on the stem 12 by a cap 15. The stem is actuated by a spring-controlled tappet head 10 on a rod 9 operated by the same cam as the valve 1. In the form shown in Fig. 2, two main valves 23 and the flap valve 36 are actuated from an overhead cam shaft 24, the former directly and the latter through a rocker arm 25 acting through a spring 28 which is stronger than the controlling- spring 29. Regulating.-Levers 32 on the same shaft as the rocker 25 are formed with extensions 33 en. gaging a slotted tube 34, which may be rotated by means of a handle 35 to open the main valves for starting. The handle 35 may be automatically depressed and released on the actuation of the switch of an electric starting-set, in which case the handle may be spring-loaded so that, on the first explosion, the valves 23 are closed by the motive fluid and the handle and starting-switch returned.
