Regulating.-In a two-stroke-cycle engine of the type in which the cylinder is scavenged by air under pressure and fuel is admitted after the closing of the air admission and exhaust orifices, governing is effected by holding open during the compression stroke an adjustably-actuated exhaust valve in the cylinder head. The invention is described in connexion with an engine forming the subject-matter of Specification 133,830 [Class 7 (ii), Internal-combustion engines. Arrangement &c. of]. Fig. 3 illustrates a cam gear for actuating the exhaust valve, the larger swell on the cam P actuating the valve during the exhaust period, and the smaller swell holding the valve open during compression for a period determined by the position of the lower end of the valve-rod D. A rocking-arm K is retained in contact with the valve-rod D by a spring Z, the length of the rod being adjusted by a screw-and-nut connexion X. Alternative means for varying the position of the lower end of the valve-rod comprise (1) an adjustable wedge movable in a direction at right-angles to the axis of the valve and located between the valve-rod and a lever which actuates the valvestem, and (2) a wedge located as in (1) but movable in a direction at right-angles to the axis of the lever. According to a further modification, the exhaust valve may be actuated by a sliding cam on the crank-shaft. The adjustment of the valve opening in each of the above-described constructions occurs simultaneously with a corresponding adjustment of the fuel supply.
