Abstract

118,408. Clarke, C. W. E. Aug. 13, 1917, [Convention date]. Regulating is effected in an engine having two or more inlet and two or more exhaust valves in each cylinder by a series of adjustable cams which control the valves independently either to put one or more of them out of action or to vary their lift in accordance with the power required. As shown in Fig. 2, inlet valves 2, 3 are actuated by cams 9, 10 respectively, mounted upon a shaft 8 which may be adjusted longitudinally. In the extreme left-hand position of the shaft, both valves receive their maximum lift. As the shaft is adjusted towards the right, the valve 3 continues to maintain its maximum opening whilst the opening of the valve 2 decreases progressively until the stem of the valve rests upon the concentric portion a, of the cam 9, when the valve closes. Further movement of the shaft to the right decreases the lift of the valve 3 until the closing position is reached, when the stem of the valve rests upon the concentric portion a of the cam 10. Similar mechanism may be used to actuate the exhaust valves. A throttle valve in the supply pipe may be connected to the mechanism for adjusting the cam-shafts which are located on opposite sides of the engine. A separate carburettor may supply each inlet pipe
