Abstract

122,180. Cattaneo, G. Jan. 2, 1918, [Convention date]. Valve-gear.-Cam gear for operating the valves positively without valve-closing springs comprises two cam-shafts arranged one above the other with the valve lever between them, and a spring member to permit expansion of the valve stem. As shown in Fig. 1, the cams for opening and closing the valve engage the same roller 5 on the valve-lever 1, and the fulcrum 2 of the valve lever is supported by a spring 14. The two cam shafts are geared together and rotate in opposite directions. In a modification the lever closes the valve by means of a sliding collar on the valve stem which engages a helical cushioning spring. The collar and the abutment for the spring are carried by a sleeve which can be screwed along the valve stem for adjustment. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the arrangement shown in Fig. 1 (cancelled), in which the valves are opened and closed by cams on a single shaft. The inlet valve stem a is actuated by a pair of cams which engage the two arms g, i of a bellcrank lever and the exhaust valve is arranged at the opposite side of the cam-shaft and worked by similar gear. The cam o for closing the valve engages a roller on arm r pivoted at n to the bellcrank lever, the roller being pressed against the cam by a laminated spring p. A stop q on the bell-crank lever limits the relative movement of the arms r, i. In a modification, the cam o engages a roller on the lever i, and the latter closes the valve through a spring connexion on the valve stem like that described above. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
