Abstract

578,468. Valve gear. ARMSTRONG WHITWORTH & CO. (ENGINEERS), Ltd., Sir W. G., and SMITH, J. J. S. Sept. 1, 1944, No. 16659. [Class 7 (vi)] Two exhaust valves b, c controlling a single port a are disposed in the cylinder head and have concentric stems, the valve b controlling the opening of the port a and the valve c its closing, and the two valves being actuated by separate mechanical means. The valves may be masked and the valve b can enter the masking without making a gas-tight seal on its seat. A single duplex spring d or separate coil or hairpin springs control the valves, which may be actuated by a single cam or separate cams, either or both of which may be adjusted on the camshaft by the engine governor.
