Reciprocating machines.-The exhaust valves, and if desired also the inlet valves, of internalcombustion engines are opened and also closed by electromagnets, preferably disposed one above the other about the valve stem; or the inlet valves may be closed by springs. Fig. 2 shows inlet and exhaust valves h, k each fitted with electromagnets comprising coils l, m for closing and opening respectively, arranged around a plunger n on the valve stem, and soft-iron cores r, 7 attached to end-plates q, 3. The coils l may be surrounded by soft-iron casings t seated in annular grooves in the base-plates q and slit at w. Micanite sleeves x may be arranged within the casings t. A single plate 2 serves for both coils l and m, which are wound and controlled so that the plate 2 is continuously magnetized. The end-plates 2, q, 3 may be laminated, and a fibre sleeve 10 may surround the cores. Adjustment of the amount of valve opening and of the timing is obtained by means of nuts 8, 9. In a modification, the core n is formed in two parts divided at the junction of the coils l, m by a non- magnetic washer, each part being split longitudinally and clamped by a screw to the valve stem. The magnets may be controlled by the distributor described in Specification 299,876, [Class 7 (vi), Internal-combustion engines, Valves &c. for].
