Abstract
237,802. Dufty, N. E. Jan. 9, 1925. Spindles; leakage, preventing. - In order to allow the valve of an engine to move laterally parallel to itself in case the valve seating becomes displaced owing to unequal heat expansion, the valve stem is surrounded by a series of packing- elements H which fit the stem closely but are of less diameter than the enclosing valve guide E, the elements H being separated by spacing- elements J which have openings larger than the valve stem but fit closely within the guide E. The packing-elements H may be of carbon, or metal bushed with carbon, and the spacing-elements are of metal. The elements are pressed together by a spring M or by the usual valve spring G.
