Abstract

200,190. Day, C. April 6, 1922. Closure members, compound; piston valves; spindles.-In an engine having inlet and exhaust controlled by a single beat valve V and by a piston valve 7 working in connection with the inlet passage 3 and exhaust passage 2, the piston valve is formed with two mushroom valve faces 9, 11 co-operating with corresponding seats 10, 12 so as to shut off the passages 2, 3 more securely. In a modification, the two faces 9, 11 are formed on opposite sides of the lower portion 7<1> of the piston valve. In order to ensure that the mushroom faces engage their seats, a spring may be interposed between the piston valve and its rod; for example, a flexible plate 18, Fig. 4, or a helical spring surrounding the rod; or the lower valve face 19, Fig. 5, may be a flexible plate, which may then he annularly corrugated.
