Abstract

230,194. Howard, H. J. Dec. 12, 1923. Valves.-In a split sleeve valve 8 reciprocating between the cylinder and cylinder head, leakage along the split portion is prevented by forming square teeth along the opposing edges and arranging so that the teeth along one edge are pressed in an axial direction against the opposing teeth, for example by forming opposing teeth out of line so that they require to be sprung into engagement, or by forming one side of the split more flexible than the other and allowing the former to be pressed against the latter by the cylinder pressure. This difference in flexibility may be obtained, where the valve is formed with two lugs A for attachment to the valve gear, by arranging the split nearer to one lug than the other. The cylinder head is fitted' with two packing-rings B surrounding a broad packing-ring C. In four-stroke engines, the inlet may take place through a valve 3 in the head so as to have a cooling action on the sleeve valve; but in twostroke engines, the inlet is by terminal ports.
