Cylinders, construction of. -A spring 14, or a setscrew, acts on a packing 11 to produce a fluid tight sliding joint between a liner 2 and a boss 10 on a cylinder jacket, the liner and the jacket being fixed together at the upper end. The spring 14 abuts on a ring 13 of steel or other metal and on a flange 4 on either the liner or the jacket; it should be large enough to clear the surface of the liner and may be either cylindrical or conical in form.
