Abstract

Pistons, balancing laterally and reducing and equalizing wear of; pistons, cooling.-In order to reduce the resistance to movement caused by the lubricant and to promote cooling, the bearing surface of a trunk piston for an internal-combustion engine is divided into a number of small areas by axial or inclined grooves, milled or otherwise formed in the piston surface. Fig. 4 shows a piston in which the bearing surface consists of two bands separated by a recessed portion d. The axial grooves b<2>. b<3> of the two bands are out of alignment, and the bearing areas may be further divided by circumferential grooves f, f<1>. The grooves b<4>, b<5>, Fig. 7, may be inclined and, when the bearing surface consists of separate bands, the grooves of the two bands may be inclined in opposite directions. The surfaces adjacent the gudgeon-pin bearings e may be recessed, as shown at g.
