Abstract

221,401. Carpmael, A., (Porter Engine Development, Inc.). Dec. 21, 1923. Closure members.-Packing for a rotary disc valve 5, having ports controlling ports 3, 4 in the cylinder 1 and cylinder head 2 respectively of an internal-combustion engine, comprises, at each side of the valve, a resilient annular diaphragm 11 clamped at its inner edge and united at its outer edge 13 to a packing-ring 14 of tempered steel, thereby forming a chamber between the two parts, to which chamber the gases have access, thereby pressing the packing-ring against the valve. The inner edge of the diaphragm is held by a shoulder 10 on a screwed nipple 7, a gasket 12 of copper &c. being interposed. The outer edge of the ring 14 is reduced by a groove 15 to about the same thickness as the diaphragm, and the two are brazed together by means of an inserted strip 17 of hard solder.
