Abstract

261,141. Bland, L. N. Sept. 21, 1925. Electromagnets. - An electromagnet used for opening the inlet valve of an internal-combustion engine, comprises side frames 35 of brass or other non-magnetic or paramagnetic metal, and a bottom frame 36 of soft iron, a brass plate 38 being interposed between the frame 36 and the engine. The top plate 39 of soft iron has an extension 40 forming a core and a guide for the valve stem 34, which carries an armature 42 flanged at 43. In a modified electromagnet for closing the exhaust valve, the armature connected to the valve stem is at the upper end of the magnet, and the fixed core at the lower end.
