Abstract

Pump-actuating mechanism. -Tyre pumps are constructed with two or more connected pistons, one or more of the rods being hollow and in communication with the interior of the barrel and through a valve with the flexible tyre connexion; the pumps may be arranged for compression in two stages. As shown in Fig. 2, a frame 1, adapted for attachment to the foot-board of a motor-car, carries at its ends the heads 2 of a pair of cylinders 13 provided with cup-leather pistons 7 on hollow rods 5, 6 connected at their inner ends by a T- coupling 9 provided with a ball valve 10, Fig. 7, for supply of air to the tyres. A downwardly projecting member 3 on the frame carries a pin to which is pivoted a lever 11 also pivotally connected to the coupling, so that operation of the lever by hand inflates the tyres. The frame 3 is provided with brackets 16, 17, Fig. 6, and a screw 18 for attachment to the foot-board. Fig. 5 shows one end of a four-cylinder two-stage pump, the cylinders 13, 20 having a single outer head 21 formed with a connecting passage 22; the solid piston-rods 23 and the hollow rod 27 are rigidly connected, and the mode of actuation and the valve connexion with the tyre are as described above.
