HERroL- SHEIMER, a citizen of the United States, re'- siding at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have'invented a new and useful Air-Pump-Operating Mechanism, of which the following is aspecifi'c'ation;
The 7 present invention appertains "to pumps, and aims to provide a novel and'improved air compressor adapted I especially for use with automobiles for inflating the tires, the device being of novel construction to enhance the utility and efiiciency' thereof,
. whereby the air can be compressed and forced into the fective manner. I lViththe foregoing and other ob ects in view which will appear as the description tiresin a convenient yet ofproceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In carrying out the invention, there is provided an elongated base 1, preferably in the form of a casting, and having at its ends upwardly projecting standards 2 to which the remote ends of a pair of alining cylinders 3 are attached in any suitable manner. Pistons 1 work within the cylinders and are connected by a common piston rod 5, whereby the pistons reciprocate in unison in the same direction, one piston moving toward the outer end of its cylinder, while the .other cylinder moves toward the inner end of its cylinder, thereby providing a double acting pump.
A longitudinal pipe. 6 is terminally attached to the standards 2 above the cylinders 3, and branches 7 connect the pipe 6 and cylinders 3 adjacent the remote ends thereof, to provide outlets for the cylinders leading into the pipe 6,said outlets7 being normally closed by check valves 8. As a convenient and effective means for reciprocatingthe piston rod 5, an upwardly. projecting hand lever le has its lower end fulcrumechas at 15-, to one edgeof the base 1 between the ends thereof, and the lever 14 is connected by a link 16 with a shorter up-' wardly projecting lever 17 having its lower end .fulcrumed, as at 18, to the same edge of the base 1 thatthe lever 14 is fulcrumed to. p The lever 14 is relatively long, whilethe' lever 17 is much shorter, in order that a proper purchase can be obtained, and the link 16 is arranged obliquely, one end thercof being spaced farther from the fulcrum 15, than the other end is spaced from the fulcrum 18. Thus, the lever 17 is swung through a larger arc than the lever 14, whereby the swinging movement of the hand lever 14 need not be great. The upper or free end of the short lever 17 is connected by a link 19 with a cross head or block 20 secured upon the rod 5 between the cylinders, whereby the oscillation of the lever 17 will impart a reciprocatory movement to said rod. The cross head 20 has a depending arm 7 21 provided with an eye 22 slidably embracwhereby the cross head is mounted tor proper sliding movement above the base.
The lever 14 is preferably divided intermediate its ends, and the adjacent ends of providing for a practically continuous flow of air, instead of an intermittent flow as with an ordinary single acting pump. The tires can therefore be inflated much quicker, and Without any lost motion, since each stroke oi the lever or operating member is eflective for compressing the air. I
The present pump provides a convenient and serviceable one for use in connection with automobiles for inflatingtires,although the pump can be used for various other pur- N A device of the character described em-' body'ing an elongated base, a rod mounted for reciprocation above the base, an upwardly projecting operating lever pivoted to the intermediate portion of the base, a second short lever pivoted to the base between the operating lever and one end of the base and projecting upwardly, an oblique link connecting the two levers, and an oblique link crossing the aforesaid link and connecting the second mentioned lever with the intermediate portion of said rod.
