LAWRENCE H. JENSEN, 0E s'ncHAELEs, ILLINOIS.
PUMP.
Application led January 19, 1914. Serial N o. 812,977.
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LAWRENCE II. JENSEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of St. Charles, in the county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to improvements in pumps, and I have embodied the same in an air pump structure suitable for inflating pneumatic tires and the like.
The object of my present invention is to provide a structure simple as to details and economical to manufacture by means of which the required pressures may be obtained with an economy of effort.
I attain the above object by means of the structure illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a side elevation of a pump embodying my invention, the structure being shown at the beginning of a compression stroke in full lines, and after having completed a portion of the compression stroke in dotted lines; and Fig. 2 is a view of the structure taken at right angles to Fig. 1 on line 2 2 thereof.
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts in the several views.
The structure comprises a foot plate or base plate, l, provided with a horizontally disposed pivot bar, 2. Iivotally or swingingly mounted upon the bar, 2, is a base, 3, of a pump cylinder, 4, in which reciprocates the usual pump piston or plunger upon the rod, 5, extending through the cylinder top, 6.
Two straps or bars, 7 and 8, are pivotally secured upon either side of the pump cylinder to the pivot bar, 2, their upper ends being brought adjacent each other some distance above the top of the cylinder.
The straps or bars 7 and 8 may or may not be bent or curved at their upper ends and between their upper ends is pivoted a link, 9, which extends and is pivoted at 10 to the upper end of the piston or plunger rod, 5.
It will be seen from the construction thus far described, that, by reason of the disposition of the link 9, as the piston or plunger rod, 5, is withdrawn from the cylinder the axis of the cylinder and the straps or bars 7 and 8 will be disposed at a gradually increasing angle the vertex of which is the pivot bar 2, and conversely, as the piston or plunger rod, 5, enters the cylinder, the angle between the axis of the piston and straps or bars 7 and 8 will decrease.
For the purpose of reciprocating the pisbridle, 13, pivoted at 14, 'between the bars or straps 7 and 8. The other end, 11, of said handle may conveniently be provided with a cross handle or grip piece 15.
It will now be seen that when the piston or plungerv rod, 5, is fully withdrawn from the cylinder inposition for the commencement of the compression stroke, the top of the piston or plunger rod, 5, and the bridle, 13, will be at their widest separation. At this position the handle 11 will work most rapidly and with the least leverage. As the piston or plunger rod 5 enters the cylinder and the pressure increases the distance between the pivotal point l0, and the bridle 1.3 decreases, thereby increasing the leverage of the handle ll and compression resulting from the application of power to the handle at the grip 15.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A pump comprising a base plate, a pump cylinder pivoted thereto, straps also pivoted to said base plate upon either side of said pump cylinder, av piston within said cylinder, a piston rod extending from said piston, a link connecting said piston rod with the upper ends of said straps and an operating handle pivoted intermediate its ends to the top of the piston rod and having a sliding connection with said straps at a point intermediate their ends.
2.1A pump comprising a base plate, a pump cylinder pivoted thereto, straps also pivoted to said base plate upon either side of said pump cylinder, a piston within said cylinder, a piston rod extending from said piston, a link connecting said piston rod with the upper ends of said straps and an operating handle pivoted intermediate its ends to the top of the piston rod, and a bridle pivoted between said straps intermediate their ends through which said handle slides.
3. A pump comprising a base plate, a pump cylinder pivoted thereto, straps also pivoted to said base plate upon either side of said pump cylinder, a piston within said cylinder, a piston rod extending; from said nrteertmony whereof ax my signature plston, a hnk connectlng sind plston rod in the presence of two Witnesses.
with the upper ends of said straps and an T v T operating handle, a portion of which ex- LAVVREBCE El' JEBSEN' tends between and connects with Said piston WVtnesses:
rod and a pointy intermediate the ends of BENJ. T. ROODHOUSE,
said' straps. HATTIE B. LEI-DIAN.
