Abstract
1,183,563. Compressors driven by compressed gas engines. O.H. DRAGER [trading as DRAGERWERK, HEINR, & BERNH DRAGER] . May 24, 1968 [May 24, 1967], No.25057/68. Headings F1M and F1N. A compressor has a small compression piston 8 reciprocated in a compression chamber 4 by an integral large piston 8<SP>1</SP> the reciprocation of the piston 8<SP>1</SP> in a cylinder 16 being caused by continuously supplying pressurized gas to a chamber 1 at one end of the piston while a chamber 9 at the other end is alternately vented and pressurized with gas from the chamber 1. In the position shown, the chamber 9 is vented through bores 14, 15 in the large piston 8<SP>1</SP> and a pressure release bore 17 in the cylinder 16. The gas supplied to the chamber 1 thus causes a compression stroke against the action of a spring 7. At the end of the stroke the chambers 1 and 9 are connected by bores 12, 13 in the piston 8<SP>1</SP> whereby chamber 9 is pressurized. Pressurization of the chamber 9 combined with the action of the spring 7 and the pressure in the chamber 4 causes a return stroke of the pistons, and the cycle is repeated. Gas to be compressed in the chamber 4 may be the same or a different gas to that used to drive the piston 8<SP>1</SP>. In a modification the bores 12, 13 are opened and closed by a valve responsive to the movement of the pistons and the bore 17 continuously vented the chamber 9 through a throttle. In Fig.2 (not shown) the pressurization and venting of the chamber 9 is via ports in the cylinder controlled by the movement of the piston 8<SP>1</SP>. The venting may be controlled by a manually operated valve.
