Abstract

A reciprocating pump or compressor comprises a cylinder 1 and a valve head 2 enclosed in a casing 7 to define therewith a space 14', 14" supplied with fluid under pressure through an inlet 16 to thereby reduce fatigue stresses on the cylinder and valve head. The pressurized fluid e.g. oil may be supplied to the space 14', 14" by a pump (not shown), or alternatively the fluid being compressed by the piston 6 may be communicated to the space through a duct 18 in the delivery line, but in either case the fluid may be vented through an outlet connection 15, cooled, and re-circulated to the space 14', 14".
