Abstract

1390029 Reciprocating pumps; centrifugal pumps JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd 24 July 1972 [29 July 1971] 35607/71 Headings F1A and F1C A fuel pump for a gas turbine engine comprises a centrifugal pump 19 and a swash-plate pump connected to a common outlet and a common inlet 11, the swash-plate pump operating at low speeds to supply fuel to the engine and to prime the centrifugal pump, and being rendered inoperative at high speeds when the centrifugal pump supplies all the fuel to the engine. The centrifugal pump comprises vanes 21 rotated in a chamber 12 by a shaft 18 to pump fuel from inlet 11 to an outlet (30), Fig.2 (not shown). A swash-plate 28 on shaft 18 reciprocates spring-loaded pistons 29 to pump liquid from inlet 11 to outlet 32 via passages 25, 24, recess 23, bores 16, recess 22 and groove 26. In operation, at low speeds, pistons 29 deliver fuel to the common outlet via check valve 33, a check valve (31), Fig.2 (not shown), in the centrifugal pump outlet being held closed by the swash-plate pump output pressure. At high speeds, the pressure generated by the centrifugal pump opens its check valve, and also acts on pistons 29 to move them inwardly clear of swash-plate 28.
