Abstract
646,310. Reciprocating pumps. MILLARS MACHINERY CO., Ltd. April 29, 1948, No. 11715. [Class 102(i)] [Also in Groups II; XXVI and XXIX] Pumps having diaphragms 72a, 72b provided with valve-controlled suction ports 79, 80 and similar discharge ports from the chambers 75, 76, are actuated by liquid under pressure which is supplied alternately to chambers 77, 78. Valves 97, 98 shut off the supply of liquid to the chambers 77, 78 and the back pressure set up in a chamber 90 causes a hydraulic lock which rocks over a casing on the supply pump and reverses the flow of supply liquid. The liquid is directed to chambers 90, 91 alternately. The diaphragm pump may be used for pumping concrete, semisolids or viscous materials and for very high pressures. Perforated stop guards may be provided to limit the movements of the diaphragm. Fig. 21 shows a piston 153 caused to reciprocate in a cylinder 150 by means of a driving disc 156 through the cam action of a projection 154 which engages a circular groove 155 eccentrically positioned within the disc 156. When the piston rises in the cylinder, liquid is sucked in through a valve 162 and on the piston down-stroke the liquid is forced through a valve 164 to an outlet 161. When a hydraulic lock occurs on the delivery side, locking pins holding a rotary member 151 are withdrawn and the member swings over through an angle until stops are contacted and ports 158, 159 engage ports 161, 160 respectively.
