Abstract
1359821 Fluid-driven pumps and compressors M R HEDLEY - SAW 14 June 1971 [13 March 1970] 1692/70 Headings F1A and F1N A reciprocating pump or compressor, Fig. 1, comprises a piston 5 dividing a cylinder 1 into a pumping chamber 6 and a motor chamber 8, a rod 4 carried by the piston 5 and extending through a block 3 at one end of the cylinder, and a valve member e.g. a valve spool 15 parallel to, or coaxial with Fig. 4, (not shown) the rod 4, and having a first position connecting a fluid inlet 13 to a port 11 leading to the motor chamber and a second position connecting the port 11 to an outlet 14. The spool valve 15 is moved to its first position by the piston 5 when the latter is returned by a spring 7 and to its second position by an adjustable striker 17 carried by the rod 4 and forming an abutment for the spring 7. A two-stage compressor is shown in Fig. 3 and comprises connected pistons 57, 58 working in first and second stage cylinders 51, 52. A valve 77 in a block 55 between the cylinders is changed over by the pistons 57, 58 to cause alternate pressurization of chambers 61, 62. Gas compressed in the first stage chamber 59 is passed through a cooler 69 before entering the second stage chamber 60. Simple modifications are described, Figs. 2 and 5, (not shown), whereby the compressor of Fig. 3 can operate as a doubleacting pump or a submersible pump. To ensure positive change-over of the spool valve the ends thereof may be provided with spring-loaded plungers which, at change-over, are depressed by contact with the associated piston. This stores up energy until sufficient to overcome the resistance of detents in the form of toroidal rings between the spool and its block 3, Figs. 7, 8 and 11, (not shown). The spring-loaded plungers in the ends of the spool valve may be depressed by pressure operated diaphragms or pistons, Figs. 9 and 10, (not shown), to effect change-over.
