Abstract
1291985 Vacuum operated motors driving compressors G C GRAHAM 24 Nov 1969 [25 Nov 1968] 57458/69 Headings F1N and F1M A reciprocating, vacuum operated, air compressor comprises a motor diaphragm 17 dividing a casing 11, 12 into working chambers 18, 19, a valve 142 operable to connect one chamber to vacuum while connecting the other chamber to atmosphere, pumping pistons 66, 91 connected by a rod 36 to the diaphragm, and a seal 49 sealing an opening 48 in the casing 12 through which the rod 36 passes. Air is compressed in two stages; firstly in a chamber 67 by upward movement of the piston 66; secondly in a chamber 92 by downward movement of the piston 91. The first stage chamber 67 receives air from the space between the pistons, during the downward stroke, through passages 74, 72 in the piston 66, the space between the pistons being in communication with the atmosphere through a filter 106. During the upward stroke an O-ring 69 cuts off communication between the passages 74, 72 and air in the chamber 67 is forced through cross passages 121 into an axial passage 82 in a rod portion 81. The increase in pressure in the passage 82 opens a spring loaded valve 84 to enter the second stage chamber 92 for subsequent further compression and discharge through an outlet valve 112. Extending axially from the diaphragm 17 through a casing seal 26 is a rod 23. This rod 23 is used to actuate the valve 142 through linkage, Fig. 5, and Figs. 2-4 (not shown). Thus reciprocation of rod 23 results in oscillation of a bar 171 and a connected valve actuator 151 provided with a mechanism which causes the oscillations of the actuator to occur with a snap action. Depending from the valve actuator is a pin (148) which engages in an arcuate slot (149) in the valve 142, the pin causing the valve to be moved alternately from one end position to the other. In each end position the valve is held by a spring detent and vacuum applied to a central port 133 is communicated to either port 137 or port 136, leading respectively, to the chambers 18, 19, whereby the diaphragm is caused to reciprocate.
