Abstract

1301386 Reciprocating pumps; fluid-pressure reciprocating engines; silencing gaseous flow NORDSON CORP 20 March 1970 [21 March 1969] 13614/70 Headings F1A, F1B and F1M An air motor B driving a pump A for supplying paint to a spray gun comprises a piston 33 controlling a pilot valve 54 through rod 68, the pilot valve controlling inlet/exhaust valve 37 for the upper cylinder chamber and also controlling a pilot relay valve 90 which controls inlet/exhaust valve 38 for the lower cylinder chamber. Valves 37 and 38 each comprise a head 44 which, in its left-hand position, connects cylinder passage 35 or 36 to air supply passage 41 via apertured sleeve 46, and, in its right-hand position, connects passage 35 or 36 to a respective exhaust port 111. Each valve 37, 38 has an operating piston 43 in a chamber 47 connected to the pilot valve chamber 80 and pilot relay valve, respectively. Pilot relay valve 90 has an operating piston in a chamber 94 connected to the pilot valve chamber 80. At the end of the upward stroke of motor piston 33, spring 72 acting on pilot valve rod 68 is compressed until it overcomes the force of a snap-action leaf spring assembly, Fig. 11 (not shown), biasing the pilot valve into its limit positions, the valve then rapidly moving to its upper position, as shown, where it closes exhaust port 83 and opens chamber 80 to supply pressure in passage 60. The supply pressure in chamber 80 is connected through passages not shown to pilot relay valve chamber 94 and chamber 47 of valve 37, and acts to move the pilot relay valve to connect chamber 47 of valve 38 to exhaust, valve 37 then moving to the left, as shown, to connect the upper side of piston 33 to pressure, and valve 38 moving to the right, as shown, to connect the lower side of piston 33 to exhaust. At the end of the downward piston stroke the pilot valve is moved by spring 71 to reverse the motor cylinder connections. Air exhausts through ports 111 into a silencer 23 comprising a box 110 thermally insulated from the valve casing 40 and provided with a resilient, ribbed wall 112. Narrow exhaust slots 117, e.g. 0À015" wide, adjacent wall 112 are kept clear of ice by flexing of wall 112 when pressure builds up due to ice formation. An air-pressure regulator 22 and pressure gauge 24 are provided. The pump Fig.3B, comprises a bucket piston 135 in a cylinder assembly 122, 123 secured to motor casing 16 by a bayonet coupling 127, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown). Delivery takes place on both the suction stroke and the discharge stroke, suction chamber 139 being twice the volume of discharge chamber 138. Seal assemblies 128, 130 are spaced apart by an expanded metal sleeve 132. Chamber 120 contains paint solvent to prevent seal damage by the paint pumped. The paint is pumped through a filter, Fig. 1 (not shown), to the spray gun.
