Abstract
718,933. Reciprocating pumps. WILLIAMS, R. W. Dec. 24, 1952, No. 32772/52. Class 102 (1). 102 (1). A double-acting reciprocating pump for use in dispensing petrol &c., comprises a casing 20 secured between closed ended cylinders 25, Fig. 2, and slidably and sealingly mount a hollow plunger 27 dividing the assembly into a pair of pumping chambers 25A, 25B having inlet and outlet valves 24A, 24B, respectively. The plunger 27 is also slidably mounted on a cylindrical block 29 secured midway in the cylinder by air supply and exhaust pipes A, B which pass sealingly through the cylinder ends. The block 29 slidably mounts a piston valve 37 controlling the supply and exhaust of compressed air alternately to and from the opposite ends of the plunger and an auxiliary valve 38a, Fig. 4, having end tappets 38b mounting spring-loaded valves 40. The valves 40 control the flow of air from the charged end of the plunger 27 to the adjacent end of the piston valve 37 to move this valve to the opposite end of its bore on the engagement of the tappet in the exhausted chamber with the associated end of the plunger. The connections of the valve 37 are then reversed and hence also the direction of motion of the plunger 27. The pump is fitted with a cut-off valve 45, Fig. 12, to automatically cutoff the supply of operating air thereto when the pressure of the pumped liquid reaches a predetermined valve. The valve 45 comprises a differential thrust head 47 housed in a chamber 43 open to the atmosphere and operable by diaphragms 48, 49 subjected to air supply pressure respectively. Normally the higher air pressure acting on the diaphragm 48 overcomes the lower liquid pressure acting on the diaphragm 49 to open an adjustable spring-loaded valve 50 to connect a source of compressed air supply to the pipe A. On the pump discharge pressure overcoming the air supply pressure the diaphragm and thrust head are moved to the right, the annular cavity 45b immediately increasing the effective area of the diaphragm 49 to snap the valve 50 closed and hold it closed until the pump pressure decreases sufficiently for the air supply pressure to again overcome the pump pressure and re-open the valve 50.
